We are honoured to contribute to the national conversation on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in counselling practice in Nigeria through the publication of a timely research article titled:
“Influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on Counselling Practice in Secondary Schools in Oyo State.”
The article was authored by Odeniyi, Olujimi Adebayo; Ituen, Alfred Ita; and Ikumoluyi, Adetokunbo Oluwatoyin and published in The Counsellor, Volume 49, Issue 3, 2026, the professional journal of the Counselling Association of Nigeria (CASSON).
About the Study
Artificial Intelligence is rapidly changing how people access information, receive support and solve problems. The counselling profession is not left out of this transformation. This study examined the influence of AI on counselling practice among secondary-school counsellors in Oyo State.
Using a descriptive research design, the researchers gathered responses from 50 counsellors across 12 local government areas. The study explored counsellors’ perceptions of AI and its potential application in supporting students facing emotional, social, personal and other developmental challenges.
The findings indicate that counsellors recognise Artificial Intelligence as a potentially valuable tool for improving counselling services. AI can support professional counsellors by providing faster access to relevant information, assisting with early identification of concerns and expanding the availability of guidance and emotional-support resources.
AI Should Support, Not Replace, Counsellors
While Artificial Intelligence presents important opportunities, it must be applied responsibly. AI should not replace the professional judgement, empathy, ethical responsibility and human connection that qualified counsellors provide.
Instead, it should serve as a complementary tool that helps counsellors improve service delivery, reach more students and respond effectively to emerging counselling needs.
Issues such as confidentiality, data protection, accuracy, informed consent, professional supervision and ethical use must remain central to the adoption of AI in counselling.
Preparing Counsellors and Students for the Future
The study highlights the need for secondary schools to be adequately equipped with relevant digital resources. Counsellors, educators and students also need appropriate training to use AI tools safely, ethically and effectively.
As technology continues to develop, counselling professionals must be actively involved in shaping how AI is introduced and used within schools and other counselling environments. Their involvement will help ensure that technological innovation remains human-centred, culturally relevant and consistent with professional counselling standards.
